Plasma vs LCD
We’ve recently featured an article on the differences between LCD and LED televisions. Now, we take a look at Plasma vs LCD . Where LED and LCD televisions were similar in both utilize LCD technology, the same cannot be said for plasma television.
Plasma Televisions
- Plasma display screens are made of glass, which may have a glare. Newer models are made with glass that reduces or eliminates glare
- Plasma televisions are larger in size, generally beginning at 42 inches and higher.
- Size range: 42 and up
- Performance pros: Deeper blacks which allow for a better contrast ratio. Less motion blur due to the faster response rate, which is great for sports and video games.
- Plasma televisions may suffer from burn-in, however manufacturers have developed methods to reduce the risk. If there is a burn-in, it is generally temporary.
Liquid Crystal Display (LCD)
- LCD televisions are more affordable than plasma and LED televisions.
- Size range: 14-60 inches, but companies have displayed larger images from 65-108 inches.
- Performance pros: Works well in bright rooms and consumes less power than plasma televisions.
- LCD televisions are less susceptible over time to burn-in. At a good viewing angle, the
- LCD television will reflect little light, thus not overly being affected by glare.
Plasma televisions have the technology to provide a better picture and viewing angle over LCDs. However, Plasmas tend to use more electricity than LCDs and may suffer from burn-in. If you are looking for a smaller television, LCD may be your only choice. In the battle between LCD vs. Plasma, the lines are a little more clear depending on what you are looking for.
